India typing challenge: can you beat the pace?

Race a simulated runner at the estimated average pace. Keyboard and phone have separate targets.

Published platform pace

  • Keyboard40.43 WPMFrom a published figure
  • Phone31.4 WPMModeled estimate
Pace sources

The opponent is a simulation at a constant pace, not a recorded person, and these estimates are not measurements of TypeDash players.

This pace comes from a different test than a TypeDash race (different text, length and scoring), so treat it as a rough reference, not a direct comparison.

  • Keyboard. Published AREALME average of 40.43 WPM for voluntary test takers in India (December 2022 to February 2023). Older platform data. Whole-word scoring; the published sample count does not define whether it counts people or tests. Device mix was not reported; we use it as the pace for keyboard races.
  • Phone. Modeled estimate. No phone figure was found for India, so we scale the published platform figure (whose device mix is unknown) by the ratio between the US study’s phone and computer medians (29.4 ÷ 37.8). Those were different groups of participants; this is a provisional modeling assumption, not a measured local phone average or a validated device conversion.

You race the pace that matches your input: keyboard or phone, as set in the game’s Settings. Full source details are further down this page.

Make it your own: Crossed Strings

After the average race, turn this page’s original story into a challenge of your own and send it to someone.

On a windy January afternoon in Jaipur, Asha flew a red kite from her roof. A kite from the next roof crossed her string, and both fell into the street. The two neighbors met at the gate, traded kites by mistake, and have flown together every year since.

Race this story

How it works

  1. Open the story in the challenge maker and read it through. Nothing is created until you lock it in.
  2. Lock it in and race it once. That run is recorded, and your challenge is ready to share.
  3. Share the challenge link. Friends race against your recorded run, and their finishes appear on your challenge’s leaderboard.

Racing this optional story creates a separate challenge with its own link and leaderboard.

Want to warm up first? Practice is a solo run; it doesn’t add a finish to any challenge you share. Practice

Keyboard or phone

Race on a physical keyboard or a touchscreen. On every challenge, Keyboard and Touch finishes are ranked on separate boards, so nobody is compared across devices.

Before you race

If you write in Hindi, Tamil or another Indian language with a phonetic tool or an Inscript layout, turn it off for this race. Otherwise your letters may be converted into another script while you type.

A rooftop rivalry

Share the link with friends in other cities and give everyone until Sunday evening to set their best finish. The winner picks the next kite colour, and everyone else races again.

Typing tests in central government recruitment

The Staff Selection Commission's notice for the Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination, 2026 includes a typing test on computer for Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant posts. Candidates choose English or Hindi as the medium, the test runs for 10 minutes, and it is qualifying in nature: the notice sets a separate speed requirement for each medium. That is a pass-or-fail rule for those posts, not a measurement of anyone's typing.

TypeDash has no connection to the Commission, and a game passage is not an exam simulation. If you are preparing for a recruitment test, its official notice is the place to check the rules that apply to you.

Typing-speed figures

The published platform figure below describes people who used that typing site, not everyone in the country. Separately, the official requirement is a rule for a specific exam or job, not a population average.

Older platform data

40.43 WPM Average for people who chose to take the AREALME online typing test in India, December 2022 to February 2023.

Published sample count: 46,900. The source’s own count; it does not establish whether these are unique people or individual tests.

How it was measured: Country means of voluntary tests, sampled anonymously through Google Analytics, with historical whole-word scoring.

Limits: Self-selected test takers, device mix not reported, and whole words rather than five-character words, so it is not a national estimate and not comparable with TypeDash results. Not a TypeDash measurement.

Publication date not established; the figure is shown for its stated data period.

Questions about this challenge

Where does this page’s estimated pace come from?

Keyboard races use the published figure shown below for India as the target pace; that source did not report which devices people used. No phone figure was found, so the phone pace is a provisional modeled estimate using the US study’s phone/computer ratio from different participant groups, not a validated device conversion. Neither is a measurement of TypeDash players.

Who is on this race’s leaderboard?

When enabled, this leaderboard ranks players who raced the average Indian from this page, each with their best valid time; keyboard and touch are ranked separately, and equal times go to whoever finished first. It shows players who chose this race, not where anyone lives. The simulated runner is never on it, and racers who hide themselves or keep their leaderboard listing private are left out.

Does the India story create a separate challenge?

Yes. Locking in this optional story and recording a run creates your own challenge, with a leaderboard for whoever you send the link to. It is separate from racing the regional average.

Will this help me with a government typing test?

We can't promise that. This is a short game passage, not an exam simulation, and TypeDash has no link to any recruitment body. Check the official notice for the test you are taking.

Is there a Hindi version?

Not yet. TypeDash passages are English for now.

Who wrote this story?

TypeDash wrote it for this page. It is original and in English, and you can change it in the challenge maker before you lock it in.

Is it free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with nothing to install.
